According to UN, the world's cities occupy only 3 % of the earth's land surface but are responsible for 60-80 % of energy consumption and 75 % of carbon emissions. Moreover, the Renovation Wave for Europe aims to at least double renovation rates in the next 10 years and ensure that renovations lead to greater energy and resource efficiency. By 2030, 35 million buildings could be renovated, and 160,000 additional 'green' jobs could be created in the construction sector.
Naturbuild project answers to the demand of qualified workers in an emerging activity within the construction sector. It is a course for workers and installers, that deals with all stages of green roofs: installation, maintenance, and deconstruction.
Results
The online course offers training in all stages of green roofs, as well as crucial information about the benefits that they produce in cities.
To be available in 2024, the course counts on the following modules:
- Awareness-raising: necessary training to gain a perspective on the benefits that green roofs bring not only to improve the building's energy bills, but also to the urban climate and biodiversity.
- Green roof installation: on the steps to follow to install different solutions depending on the type of roof.
- Maintenance of green roofs: on how to preserve the different elements of green roofs: vegetation, installations, etc.
- Deconstruction of green roofs: on how to deconstruct a green roof to install a new one, and how to deconstruct a common roof to install a green roof.
Why Naturbuild is interesting?
Currently, the installation of green roofs includes different professional profiles (waterproofing installers, gardeners, plumbers, etc.). The course covers the process carried out by all the trades in all the stages, including the deconstruction; and it is developed through collaborative work among consortium's organizations, that are specialized in training and energy. Moreover, this training is focused on the solutions used in the different subclimates of Mediterranean countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece).
This project involves external organizations from the four countries, dedicated to green roofs.
